18 December 2004: [USA] OFFICIALS: PREVENTION BEST FLU FIX
Cleaner habits are needed to help keep the flu bug in check this season after the vaccine shortage this fall, said Lenawee County Medical Director Dr. Dennis Chernin. "Flu is one of the worst diseases in terms of killing people," Chernin said. Those with serious underlying health problems are most at risk from the disease, he said.

The most effective way to prevent catching the virus, other than a vaccination, he said, is for people to wash their hands often. The flu is contracted most often by touching something after an infected person has coughed or sneezed nearby, he said. The virus can then enter the body when a person rubs his eyes or touches his nose or mouth, he said.
